Enhancing Music Practice and Pedagogy through Educator Partnerships

Chan Mei Yin Irene
Lead Teacher, Music
West Grove Primary School

How can partnerships with artist-educators and other music educators enhance music pedagogic practice?

Music Lead Teacher Irene Chan shares the journey of engaging in various partnerships that honed her creative voice, her craft and her perspectives as a composer, and her music teaching. Her partnerships with various artist-educators and with other music educators had helped her enhanced her flow in facilitating music making and applying compositional ideas to guide students in their creative process.  She reflects on how her artistic learning informs her pedagogy, and discusses how activities can be designed for primary school students to widen their imagination, and to express their personal ideas, emotions and stories through music.  Irene’s experience illustrates how vibrant artistic practice and exchanges with various educators can transform teachers’ pedagogy, through the modelling of the creative process.

How can partnerships present possibilities for interdisciplinary and student-centric learning?

As a music teacher in NJC’s specialised Music Programme, Denise Lee shares reflections and insights gained from a 2016 interdisciplinary collaboration with NJC’s Art Elective Programme, where secondary 3-4 Music and Art students explored common issues and questions underlying experimental art and music of the late 20th century and beyond.   This common space between the visual arts and music served as a vibrant arena for a fruitful exchange between students from both art forms on the larger question: “What is Art?”
